"What's on in dance research in Melbourne in November?"

Traces, scores, annotation, criticality, translation, digitisation, transmission are some keywords linking five events taking place in November 2017 in Melbourne.

  • Exhibition: "The Score" (The Ian Potter Museum of Art, University of Melbourne. Closing 5 November)
  • Discussion Platform: "Exercises in Criticality" (Dancehouse. 30 October to 4 November)
  • Public Talk: "Motion Bank and related research projects" (Lucy Guerin Inc. Studios. 13 November)
  • Conversation: "Dance And/ In the Gallery" (Last in the Dance Remains series. Monash University Museum of Art. 20 November)
  • Symposium: "Dance Becoming Data & Encoding Local Knowledge" (Lucy Guerin Inc. Studios. 25 November).

This list offers opportunities for collective enquiry, discussion and debate, for study, experiments and cross-disciplinary connections.

The two events taking place at Lucy Guerin Inc. Studios stem from a research partnership between the Deakin Motion.Lab, Deakin University (AUS), Centre for Dance Research, Coventry University (UK) and Motion Bank, Hochschule Mainz University of Applied Sciences (DE). At the core of this partnership is a shared interest in the transformative effects, possibilities and implications of dance digitisation.

13 November. Starting at 18.30. Location: 28 Batman Street. "Motion Bank and related research projects" is a free public talk by Scott deLahunta about interdisciplinary research projects exploring digital methods of dance documentation, analysis, visualisation and transmission.

"Since the early 1990s, dance artists have engaged digital technologies for education, creation and research purposes. This work takes on new meaning in the light of recent 21st century developments in computational and networked media."

25 November. From 12.00 to 18.00. Location: 28 Batman Street. "Dance Becoming Data & Encoding Local Knowledge" is a public symposium aiming to spark a dialogue on the implications of dance digitisation for the documentation and dissemination of contemporary dance as well as other forms of embodied practice.

For this event, three panels are being organised with the focus on annotation (in practice and different disciplinary perspectives), transmission (new modes of sharing dance knowledge) and systems (experimenting with dance data). Invited to share experiences and thoughts on these topics are: Shaun McLeod, Olivia Millard and Jondi Keane(1); Steph Hutchison(2); Kim Vincs(3); Sarah Whatley(4); Rachel Fensham(5); Anton Koch and Scott deLahunta(6); and Lucy Guerin.

The symposium will be free, but space is limited. To register to attend and/ or for more information email: novmel2017@gmail.com

The symposium is sponsored by the School of Communication and Creative Arts, Deakin University

Those who are interested in some background history for the symposium might like to attend the talk on "Motion Bank and related research projects" on 13 November 2017. The symposium also takes inspiration from the March 2017 Digital Echoes C-DaRE Symposium. Dance Data: Libraries and Processes.
